National evaluation of the Partnerships for Older People Projects pilotsWithin the Partnerships for Older People Projects (POPP) 29 local authorities and their health and voluntary sector partners were funded by the Department of Health between 2006 and 2009. They were to develop services for older people aimed at promoting their health, well-being and independence, and preventing or delaying their need for higher intensity or institutional care.
The PSSRU took the lead in the national evaluation of the pilot projects. The evaluation findings were launched on 16 January by the Secretary of State for Health, Andy Burnham, when Karen Windle from the PSSRU presented key messages from the evidence collected.
The complex and multi-method national evaluation explored the process of implementation as well as the outcomes and found that a wide range of projects resulted in improved quality of life for participants and considerable savings as well as better local relationships.

Unit Costs of Health and Social Care - new 2009 volumeThe latest updated volume in this annual series is now available online. (Printed copies will be available in the new year.) The series brings together information from a variety of sources to estimate national unit costs for a wide range of health and social care services. The report contains tables for more than 130 types of service which as well as providing the most detailed and comprehensive information possible, also quote sources and assumptions so users can adapt the information for their own purposes. International Conference on Evidence Based Policy in Long-term Care 8th to 11th September 2010The conference aims to provide a forum for exchanging the latest international evidence on key Long-Term Care policy topics such as how to organise, deliver, fund and regulate services. The emphasis is therefore on evaluative research with clear impact on policy. Also, and although not a formal requirement, contributors are encouraged to highlight the international relevance of the research submitted, either in terms of the evidence used in the analysis and/or of the topics and implications of the work. Queen's Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further EducationPSSRU at LSE is pleased to announce that LSE Health and Social Care (of which it is a part) has been awarded a prestigious Queen's Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education 2009. Martin Knapp, director of PSSRU at LSE, was one of the LSE representatives who attended a reception at St James’ Palace on 18 November to hear the announcement. One of the other groups to be awarded a Queen's Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education in 2009 is the Health Services and Population Research Department at the Institute of Psychiatry, King's College London. PSSRU enjoys many collaborative links with the Institute, and one of the component parts of the award-winning Department is the Centre for the Economics of Mental Health, directed by Martin Knapp. Read the IOP news article here.
