Research Interests

Matthew Townsend is a PhD candidate in social policy and health economics at the LSE. His doctoral research focuses on the introduction of care quality incentives, and the potential for such policies to facilitate more integrated and patient-centred models of care in Canada and England. He is a fellow at the Canadian Centre for Health Economics, and principal investigator on a project based at the Institute for Clinical and Evaluative Sciences.

Matthew has recent consultant experience with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, World Health Organization, and Canadian Foundation for Healthcare Improvement. Projects have involved evaluations of health insurance systems, developing country profiles and policy recommendations related to health sector organization and financing, and providing policy insights into financial protection options for social health insurance systems. Prior to pursuing his PhD, Matthew led several projects related to hospital and community funding reform as a senior policy advisor at the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care in Ontario, Canada.
