Margaret Ellis originally graduated as an occupational therapist. She has managed physical disability and mental health services, has previously lectured at the London College of Furniture (MSc Course - Designing for Disability), was manager of the Wheelchair, Orthotic & Prosthetic Services at the Royal London Hospital, was an adviser to Westminster Health Care Ltd, and has advised other private sector healthcare providers. She has been involved in personnel selection for healthcare in Saudi Arabia and sat on various university and research boards, including the London Hospital and King’s College Medical Schools, Universities in Southampton, Ulster and Edinburgh.
Maggie has also been in charge of project management, structures and finance for health and welfare systems in the UK and in Japan.
Maggie has been involved in a number of research projects with responsibility for grant holding and supervisory roles. These include projects focusing on technology applications to assist with independent living of older people at home; accident prevention and reduction which included visiting over 200 older people at home who had had an accident; the use of vitamin D with elderly people; healthcare and disability equipment; design and access; orthotics and prosthetics; rehabilitation services; assessment of disability and product evaluation by users for the UK Department of Health. She has received grants from the Department of Health, Department of Trade & Industry, ESPRC, MRC.
Maggie is also the managing director of West Square Associates (WSA), which provides assessment and treatment for people with a wide range of disabilities, including children and adults of all ages. Advice is also provided on design and adaptation of buildings and services. This is based on a range of expertise gained through membership of National and International Committees as well as practical experience with specific projects. WSA also organises education/study visits on healthcare, disability, architecture, service structure, technology, communications, and related topics.
