Research Interests

Shereen joined PSSRU in September 2018 as an Associate Director and Professor of Care and Health Policy Evaluation.

Before this, Shereen worked for 15 years at the Policy Institute, King’s College London and became a Chair in 2014. Her work at King’s focused on ageing demographics, long term care demands, care and health workforce and migration. Shereen has led a number of large projects on migration/mobility and global care; transnational social work; diversity and equality, wage poverty, structures and differentials and has evaluated a number of national schemes focused on improving workforce outcomes and piloting new models of working in care and health settings.

Shereen’s research career started in 1991 after completing her undergraduate studies in statistics and economics, she worked in demography and population development research with international organisations such as the Population Council, the United Nations, Ford Foundation and the League of Arab States focusing on child and maternal morbidity, social development and women employment in North Africa and West Asia. During that time, she completed post graduate qualifications in computer science and statistics. Shereen was then awarded a number of scholarships to pursue further postgraduate studies including an MSc in Medical Demography at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and a PhD in Demography/Population Studies at the London School of Economic. During her MSc and PhD studies she continued to work with the Population Council in New York on research focusing on women’s autonomy, family formation and social determinants of health and wellbeing.

Shereen is an accomplished author with over a 100 peer-reviewed articles in academic journals including: Work Employment and Society, Journal of Social Policy, Ageing and Society, Aging and Mental Health, Administration in Mental Health Policy, European Journal of Ageing, Journal of Rural Studies among others. She is a competent speaker and is often invited nationally and internationally as a keynote and public speaker,  especially in relation to the long term care workforce and global ageing. Shereen has been invited as a distinguished international expert by various international organisations and universities including the University of New South Wales, Bergen University, UNICEF, UN/ESCWA, the European Social Network and the Future Social Services Institute/RMIT among others.

Shereen is the founder and author of the Social Care Workforce Periodical, and the network lead of ROWM, the Research On Workforce Mobility research network. Shereen sits on a number of governmental and non-governmental advisory boards and is a BBC Academy news/media commentator.

Shereen is currently a co-investigator in the Sustainable Care: Connecting People and Systems project: funded by an ESRC large grant and led by Professor Sue Yeandle at the University of Sheffield; She is also a  partner in the STRiDE project: funded by the  Research Council UK’s Global Challenges Research Fund and led by Professor Martin Knapp at the London School of Economics.

Shereen is a Visiting Professor in Statistics at the Department of Mathematics, King’s College London and an Adjunct Professor in Applied Statistics and Population Science at the University of Southern Queensland, Australia.
