Carers Week at Kent

University of Kent researcher Diane Fox will be raising awareness for Carers Week by setting up a lunchtime ‘information station’ at a different campus restaurant each day this week (Monday to Thursday).

Motivated by the findings of research she conducted with colleagues at the Personal Social Services Research Unit (PSSRU), she aims to raise awareness about the contribution made to society by unpaid carers, that is, people helping a friend or relative who require extra support because of ill- health, a mental health problem or a physical or learning disability.

Many people do not see themselves as a ‘carer’ and so don’t access the support that is available and balancing caring with work or studying can be particularly stressful.

The research, funded by the Department of Health’s NIHR School for Social Care Research, shows that easy access to helpful information is one of several factors associated with better quality of life for carers.

The travelling ‘information station’ aims to raise awareness and offer signposting to further sources of information and support. Here is where you’ll find it:

PSSRU is an independently-funded research unit, based within the School for Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research in the Cornwallis Building.
