The PSSRU was established at the University of Kent at Canterbury in October 1974. In 1996 new branches opened at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and at the University of Manchester. Until 2010 PSSRU at Kent and LSE shared a common identity and a website with PSSRU at the University of Manchester. PSSRU at Kent and LSE continue to have strong links, and several staff have joint appointments.
The PSSRU at the University of Kent is based in the School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research in Canterbury. It includes the publications office and the Sir Roy Griffiths Library of Community Care. The branch director is Professor Julien Forder.
The PSSRU at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) is part of LSE Health & Social Care, which in 2009 was awarded a Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education. The School has an unmatched reputation for depth and breadth in British social science with a long history of formidable policy impact. The branch director is Professor Martin Knapp.
The NIHR School for Social Care Research (SSCR), led by Martin Knapp, is a partnership between six leading academic centres of social care research in England: Personal Social Services Research, London School of Economics (LSE); Personal Social Services Research Unit, University of Manchester; Social Policy Research Unit, University of York; Personal Social Services Research, University of Kent; Social Care Workforce Research Unit, Kings College London; and the Tizard Centre, University of Kent. In addition, researchers funded by the NIHR SSCR become fellows.
The NCCSC is a consortium led by the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) with: Research in Practice; Research in Practice for Adults; Evidence for Policy and Practice Information and Co-ordinating Centre (EPPI-Centre); and Personal Social Services Research Unit (PSSRU). The NCCSC coproduces NICE guidance with people who use care, their families and friends, care providers and commissioners.
The Quality and Outcomes of Person-Centred Care (QORU) Research Unit is a collaboration between researchers at the University of Kent (PSSRU and Tizard), the University of Oxford, and PSSRU at the London School of Economics.
The Economics of Social and Health Care Research Unit (ESHCRU) is a joint collaboration between the Centre of Health Economics (CHE) at the University of York and the Personal Social Services Research Unit at the London School of Economics and the University of Kent.
The Policy Innovation Research Unit (PIRU) is a collaboration between the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), the Personal Social Services Research Unit (PSSRU) at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), and the Health and Care Infrastructure Research and Innovation Centre (HaCIRIC) at Imperial College London Business School plus RAND Europe and the Nuffield Trust.
