Costs of children’s social care provision

February 22, 2022

By Professor Karen Jones,  Joint Director of PSSRU

Our unit costs report 2021 edition was published on time with a mixture of topical articles and schema.  This is PSSRU’s 29th volume of the report and the last within the current NIHR contract.

Scroll down section one to chapter 6 and you will find our home for children’s services. This chapter contains unit costs that are constructed using the Section 251 data (2019-2020) provided by the Department for Education. The NHS reference costs for children’s health services are drawn from the NHS Improvement, National Cost Collection (2019-2020). All costs are uprated to 2020/2021 prices.

What is in our 2021 edition?

An article from Lisa Holmes, Director of the Rees Centre at Oxford University provides a timely cost benefit analysis of the provision of children’s social care (https://www.pssru.ac.uk/pub/uc/uc2021/holmes.pdf).

In spite of another turbulent year in 2021, it was business as usual for the unit costs report.

We would like to thank our colleagues for their help with providing data, reviewing draft chapters and producing this report.
